The Roman poet Ovid claimed he was exiled by Emperor Augustus for 'a poem and an error'. A favored subject for painters, Vito Di Bari takes inspiration from "Ovid in exile" (1915) a version by Romanian post-impressionist Ion Theodorescu Sion in his Jack in Exile. In place of Ovid, Jack Ma, founder of Chinese conglomerate Alibaba, stands at the far left of the composition, pushed out as far the land will take him, his back turned on the shoreline, his eyes, lit by the soft glow of a sunset, looking pensively into the distance. Di Bari replaces the Romanian landscape of Ovid's exile with the towering cliffs and small fishing boats of the Thai coast. It was here that Jack Ma retreated after falling foul of the Chinese government, not just for his business activities but like Ovid for his words: a speech criticizing Chinese regulation initiated his exile from public life.
